Audi offers LED headlights as option for new 2012 A6 saloon

Audi will introduce LED headlights as an option for the new 2012 A6 saloon. Buyers may choose these new headlights as an alternative to the halogen or bi-xenon lamps. Energy consumption is reduced as the LED units emit a strong white light, with each using only 40 watts of electricity. In the press release, Audi said that the sophisticated LED units use only four one-chip and five two-chip LEDs to make dipped-beam light, and 24 white LEDs to comprise the daytime running lights in each headlight.

As a result, power consumption and maintenance is reduced, leading to an excellent service life. The new LED lights come with intelligent systems such as adaptive light control and high-beam assist, which are targeted at offering maximum visibility without disturbing other road users.

The press release states further that the headlight control unit features a small video camera at the base of the rear view mirror. It routes data from the optional MMI navigation plus navigation system to anticipate changes in ambient lighting. For instance, visibility can be enhanced as the cornering light arrangement can be triggered before the car reaches a junction or corner. [via - 4wheelsnews]
