Wheel Alignment

The alignment process consists of 3 basic parameters which are toe, caster and camber.

Toe Adjustments
Toe is expressed in either degrees or fraction of an inch. The toe angle identifies the exact direction the tires are pointed relative to the centerline of the car when viewed from above. Straight toe keeps the wheels pointed straight, when pointed slightly toward each other would be toe-in while away from each other would be toe-out. Performance rides are normally set with a small amount of toe out. This provides directional stability and is typically used to help compensate for the suspension bushings compliance to enhance tire life. Any casual bump on the pavement ,accident or changes in the ride height may change the toe setting.

Front wheel drive vehicles requires instead some negative toe out while rear wheel vehicles requires some positive toe in to enable the tires to run parallel to each other at speed. Besides that, Toe can also be used to adjust the car handling characteristics. Increased toe in will typically result in reduced over-steer, help steady the car and enhance high speed stability. While increase toe out will typically result in reduced under steer, helping free up the car especially during initial turin in while entering a corner.

Caster Adjustment
Caster is expressed in degrees. This positions the wheel forward or rearward when viewed directly from the side of the car. Positive caster, positions the wheel closer to the front bumper, and negative caster, positions the wheel toward the rear of the fender. Increasing the amount of positive caster will increase steering effort and straight line tracking, as well as improve high speed stability and cornering effectiveness. Positive caster, as with most performance cars also increases tire lean when cornering as the steering angle is increased.

Camber Adjustment
Camber is expressed in degrees. Camber alter the angle of the wheel relative to vertical. If the wheel slants in towards the chassis, it has negative camber. If it slants away from the car, it has positive camber. Normally a lowered vehicle will exhibit a certain amount of negative camber. Camber Bolt on wheel kits allow to reset the camber angles to its optimum settings. However rear camber adjustability is not critical on most FWD vehicles. To have a better cornering grip and longer tire life it is prefer to have more negative camber. However there are some drawbacks which are having floaty feeling when braking since the tires are not flat on the ground and the inside edges of the tires will end up wearing faster than the outside edge. The trick is to use enough negative camber to provide good cornering performance while not requiring the tire to put too muc of its load on the inner edge while traveling in a straight line.

Nissan Variable Compression Engine

Nissan has developed a new engine mechanism that enables both high power of turbo engine and low fuel consumption of non-turbo engine.

The newly developed piston/crank mechanism (multi-link type) enables optimum compression ratio control.
For example, the fuel economy of a non-turbo engine and the power output of a turbocharged engine can be achieved in one engine.
By the ideal piston motion of multi - link, significant vibration reduction has been obtained.

New piston crank mechanism
By applying multi-link mechanism, significant improvement of engine vibration coupled with friction reduction (basic condition of engine mechanism) have been obtained. And in addition, function of variable compression ratio control under engine running condition has been achieved.

Example of CR control (turbo engine)
The highest compression ratio is used in city driving to increase thermal efficiency for improved fuel economy. The system shifts to a low compression ratio for super charging when accelerating or climbing hills. This enables also higher turbocharging for much power while suppressing engine knock.

Low vibration nature of multilink mechanism
Piston motion in the conventional mechanism is essentially asymmetrical, with rapid motion occurring at top dead center. That unbalance deteriorates engine vibration in the case of conventional 4-cylinder engines. With the multilink VCR mechanism, the piston’s reciprocal action achieves ideal simple harmonic motion, resolving the unbalance. This enable low vibration property of in-line 4 cylinder engine close to that of V type 6 cylinder engines.

Saab Variable Compression

Saab is now launching an entirely new engine concept named SVC, which stands for Saab Variable Compression. Owing to the SVC engine's unique design, it offers performance on a par with units twice its size but with the fuel consumption of a small engine. The SVC engine is a five-cylinder 1.6 litre unit producing 225 bhp, and it delivers no less than 305 Nm of torque.

What is unique about the SVC engine is that it features variable compression. In other words, the ratio between the piston's displacement volume and the volume of the combustion chamber is not constant, as it is in a conventional engine. Instead, the SVC registers current needs and decides how much the mixture of fuel and air is to be compressed in the cylinder prior to ignition. The upper part, the mono-head, can be inclined up to four degrees to achieve optimum compression, which means that the engine always works at its most efficient level.

Limited Slip Differential (LSD)

The Normal Differential
On every car a basic differential is fitted to distribute the engine's power to the driving wheels. The basic differential gear supplies the power to the wheels which is/are loaded with least resistance. This allows the car's wheels to run at different speeds in a turn with least resistance. However, when a car is cornering close to it's limit, the car will exhibit roll, a leaning to one side, causing the inside tire(s) to lose forward traction and lateral grip. The wheels lift and cause excessive spin because of lack of downward force or weight distribution. This wheel spin is useless for acceleration until the tire(s) regain traction and start to translate the power to the ground. Limited Slip Differential (LSD) is needed to alleviate this wheel spin.

Limited Slip Differential
An LSD is constructed similarly to the normal differential As you can see, the pressure plate rings have the side gear, the pinion and the pinion gears locked inside and behind each pressure rings are a number of clutch plates. When torque is applied to the differential, the differential case will rotate and throw the pinion into the pressure ring cam. The pressure ring is then pushed out against the clutch plates thereby squeezing them together. This in turn causes the wheels to gradually lock together, depending on the power applied. This effect limits the wheel spin during hard cornering and applies power to the wheels evenly when more power is applied. On acceleration and deceleration, it provides even grip and on neutral power, it frees up for less drag and easier turning.

Different Type of LSD Configurations (1 Way, 1.5 Way & 2 Way)
A 1 way differential means that the cam is shaped in such way as to have positive lock only when accelerating.

The 1.5 way functions almost same as a 2 way but provides less lock when decelerating. The 1.5 way can provide more forgiving balance when braking than a full 2 way setup, although it is less effective for true racing applications, it provides easier operation for beginners in throttle off conditions. 1.5 way is also very effective for front wheel drive cars which need extra stability during braking.

The 2 way is constructed in a way to have positive lock motion in both acceleration and deceleration mode

Comparison of LSD

The OEM supplied LSD, standard and optional on many cars today are 2 pinions. This design has very low positive lock and it is designed to provide some sporty feel to the showroom cars. Because of the nature of this low lock design, it is just slightly more effective than not having one at all. Not a choice for true performance drivers.

A performance LSD should have at least 4 pinions. This is the design used for racing and rallies around the world. The positive lock ratio and linear lock characteristics are determined by a number of components. The cam profile, clutch plate quantity and size, initial torque of the preload springs and the lubricants.

A viscous type, torsen type and helical type are some of other designs used as OEM equipment or optional LSD unit. These designs are commonly used since they are less aggressive and easier to maintain than the clutch type racing LSD unit. In order to achieve the maximum traction control, most OEM performance divisions and aftermarket manufactures use the clutch type design for their LSD unit.
